AI developers also take considerably longer to hire than general software roles. AI skills have become the single most difficult capability for employers to find, surpassing traditional engineering and IT for the first time. And the broader IT skills gap, of which AI is the most acute piece, risks $5.5 trillion in delays and lost business by 2026, according to IDC.
These numbers converge on a single conclusion: building an AI team now means building a team where some members are human and some are agents. ML Engineer. Turns data science prototypes into robust, scalable production solutions. Writes production code, optimizes model performance, integrates models into broader systems. The bridge between data science and software engineering. Salary range: $150K-$220K. When to hire: when you have prototypes ready for production.
Data Engineer. Designs, maintains, and optimizes the architecture that cleans, curates, and moves data. A large portion of AI success depends on healthy data pipelines. This role grows in the agentic era rather than shrinking, because agents need even cleaner, more accessible data. Salary range: $130K-$180K. When to hire: before your first data scientist.
AI Product Manager. Translates business needs into AI capabilities. Without dedicated product management, generative AI becomes a capability searching for a use case. This is the role that ensures you build the right thing, not a merely impressive one. Salary range: $140K-$200K. When to hire: first or second.
AI Ethics and Governance Specialist. The most critical hire on your AI team is the AI Translator, the person who bridges technical capability and business reality, not a data scientist, an ML engineer, or a CAIO. The 'Translator Layer' refers to leaders who understand enough about the technology to see what is possible, enough about people to know what will be adopted, and enough about the business to connect those capabilities to real outcomes. An AI translator bridges the gap between AI capabilities and human organizations. They come with a business background and working knowledge of AI concepts. They are critical for gaining buy-in for AI pilots because they can discern what success means for both the technical team and the business stakeholders. Without this role, even impressive AI capabilities remain unused. With it, even modest capabilities get scaled.

McKinsey identifies the Agent Orchestrator as a critical new role alongside hybrid managers and AI coaches.
AI Product Manager becomes Human-Agent Workflow Designer. The role expands from managing AI products to managing portfolios of agents as products: defining what agents can do, what they cannot, when they escalate to humans, and how human-agent handoffs work. Every workflow now has two participants, a human component and an agent component.
Data Engineer remains Data Engineer, and grows. This is the role that does not shrink. Agents need clean, well-structured, accessible data even more than traditional models did. Data governance becomes the foundation before the feature. If anything, the agentic era elevates data engineering from a support function to a strategic enabler.
The productivity evidence supports this evolution. Harvard Business School research found that ideas ranking in the top 10% were three times more likely to come from teams using AI. AI in human-AI teams acts as a near-substitute for an additional human collaborator: a single human with AI achieves productivity comparable to a two-human team. Firms using AI to augment (not replace) human capabilities achieved 3x the performance improvement of firms using AI primarily to automate. Key responsibilities include monitoring agent uptime and performance, detecting behavioral drift, implementing kill switches and circuit breakers, and ensuring agents comply with governance policies. When an agent makes a bad decision at 2 AM, this is the person whose phone rings.
3. Human Oversight Specialist. MIT Sloan argues that management frameworks must explicitly assign roles and responsibilities for both human and AI systems over every stage of the AI lifecycle. The Human Oversight Specialist defines the supervision model: when do agents escalate to humans? What decisions require human approval? What is the threshold for autonomous action? Singapore's IMDA framework clarifies that oversight means deliberate design of monitoring, intervention, and authority boundaries, not manual approval of every action. This distinction is critical: oversight that requires humans to approve everything defeats the purpose of agents. Oversight that designs intelligent boundaries enables scale.
4. AI Governance Officer. more than 100,000 AI ethics and governance professionals are now sought annually. This role implements Minimum Viable Governance, audits AI systems for responsible deployment, tracks regulatory changes across jurisdictions (EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF), and ensures that the speed of AI deployment does not outrun the organization's ability to govern it. By 2027, half of all AI-enabled enterprise applications will require new oversight positions dedicated to governance, risk, and accountability.
5. AI Translator (Elevated). The translator role evolves in the agentic era from bridging technical and business teams to bridging humans and agents. The new translator helps business stakeholders understand what agents can and cannot do, designs the communication protocols between human decision-makers and agent outputs, and ensures that the organization adapts its workflows to include agent capabilities. The First AI Hire at a 50-Person Company
If you are a startup CEO reading this and thinking, "this is all enterprise, what about me?", most AI hiring advice gets your situation wrong: your first AI hire should not be a data scientist.
